A new three-storey self-storage facility by National Storage currently under construction in Mount Albert, along New North Road, is facing mounting opposition from local residents.
Residents have criticised the development as being entirely out of character with the surrounding neighbourhood, arguing that it undermines the area’s residential appeal and cohesion.
The structure, rising approximately 14 metres and spanning three levels, is a large-scale warehouse-style building situated within a densely populated residential zone near central Auckland. One local resident described the building as “incompatible with the character of Mount Albert,” voicing strong dissatisfaction with the project.
The development comes amid growing demand for self-storage solutions in Auckland’s property market. However, locals have raised concerns over both the construction process and the long-term impact of the facility. In particular, they argue that introducing a predominantly commercial and industrial structure into a residential neighbourhood could lead to declining property values and a deterioration in living conditions.
“Mount Albert has long been regarded as a quiet, family-oriented suburb,” residents said, “and the introduction of such a large storage facility will significantly erode its residential appeal.” Some have also criticised the continuation of construction despite formal complaints and objections already lodged.
National Storage, a major operator expanding its footprint across New Zealand, has promoted the project as a solution to the city’s shortage of storage space.
