Auckland Council, which sends rates bills to 630,000 taxpayers, stated it strives to minimize errors through data integrity checks and year-round maintenance. However, Rhonwen Heath, the council’s head of rates, valuations, and data management, acknowledged that “isolated errors can occur in large-scale processes” but emphasized that such issues are “generally rare.”
Heath urged taxpayers who suspect inaccuracies in their rates bills to contact the council immediately. The council operates a website where property owners can challenge their property ratings, and it acts swiftly to correct errors when identified.
The Herald’s analysis suggests these errors primarily stem from human oversight. Typically, rates for residential properties are calculated at around 0.35% of the property’s value, but some bills significantly exceeded this benchmark.
