A prime parcel of land in Rotorua’s Lakeview area has been sold for NZ$1.4 million to facilitate the development of public housing for low-income families.
The 2.2-hectare site, previously owned by the Rotorua Lakes Council, was transferred as part of a broader initiative to provide affordable housing options for local residents. Located in the heart of Rotorua, the land was formerly used as a military training facility.
This sale aligns with a joint effort by the New Zealand government and local authorities to expand public housing for low-income households, aiming to alleviate housing shortages and foster sustainable community development.
The buyer, a private development company working in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, plans to construct approximately 100 public housing units within the next three years. The project will prioritize high-quality living spaces for low-income and vulnerable families, incorporating modern design and eco-friendly construction techniques to enhance the quality of life for residents.
Rotorua Lakes Council Mayor Steve Chadwick hailed the sale as “a pivotal decision that will deliver tangible benefits to our community.” She added, “The development of public housing for low-income families will help make Rotorua a more inclusive and livable city.” Chadwick also emphasized the project’s potential to stimulate the local economy and create jobs.
While Rotorua is renowned as a tourist destination, rising housing prices and rental costs in recent years have left low-income residents grappling with housing insecurity. In response, the government and local authorities are implementing policies to increase the supply of public housing and support vulnerable populations.
The development company intends to incorporate community input into the design and construction process, with groundwork set to begin early next year. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve Rotorua’s housing landscape and strengthen community cohesion.

약 2.2헥타르 규모의 이 토지는 로토루아 도심에 자리 잡고 있으며, 과거 군사 훈련소로 사용되던 곳이다. 이번 매각은 뉴질랜드 정부와 지역 당국이 협력해 추진 중인 저소득층 공공 임대주택 확대 정책의 하나로, 주거난 해소와 지역사회의 지속 가능한 발전을 목표로 한다.

로토루아는 관광지로 잘 알려져 있지만, 최근 몇 년간 주택 가격과 임대료 상승으로 저소득층 주민들이 주거 불안을 겪고 있다. 이에 따라 정부와 지방 자치단체는 공공 임대주택 공급을 확대하고 주거 취약 계층을 지원하기 위한 다양한 정책을 추진하고 있다.
