‘Foodstuffs North Island granted $100 million consent for major PAK’nSAVE redevelopment’
Auckland’s North Shore is set to become home to New Zealand’s largest new supermarket, with Foodstuffs North Island receiving resource consent for a $100 million redevelopment of its PAK’nSAVE store in Takapuna.
The project will see the demolition of the current supermarket on Wairau Road and the construction of a significantly larger store spanning 1.8 hectares. The new development will feature approximately 7,800 square metres of retail space and parking for 430 vehicles across both ground and underground levels—making it around 40% larger than the existing store.
Foodstuffs says the upgrade will offer customers and the local community a vastly improved shopping experience while boosting the Takapuna economy. The new supermarket will also feature enhanced energy efficiency and state-of-the-art logistics and automation systems.
“This is an investment not only in our customers’ future experience, but in the long-term growth of the Takapuna area,” said Mark Fogle, Head of Property and Development at Foodstuffs North Island. “We’ve carefully balanced community needs with environmental sustainability.”
The Auckland Council granted the resource consent without the possibility of appeal, in line with provisions under the Resource Management Act. Construction is expected to begin as early as mid-2025, with completion targeted for 2027.
Foodstuffs estimates the project will create around 300 construction jobs and lead to more than 100 new permanent roles once the store opens.
The redevelopment is seen as a strategic move in New Zealand’s competitive supermarket landscape. PAK’nSAVE, known for its large-format stores and low-price positioning, is expected to strengthen its market presence through the expansion.

오클랜드 노스쇼어 지역 타카푸나에 뉴질랜드 최대 규모의 신규 슈퍼마켓이 들어설 전망이다. 식료품 유통 대기업인 ‘푸드스터프 노스아일랜드(Foodstuffs North Island)’는 약 1억 뉴질랜드달러를 투입해 ‘팍앤세이브(PAK’nSAVE)’ 매장을 신축하는 개발계획에 대해 자원사용승인을 획득했다고 밝혔다.
해당 개발은 오클랜드 타카푸나 중심지인 와이라우 로드(Wairau Road)에 위치한 기존의 팍앤세이브 매장을 철거하고, 1.8헥타르 부지에 걸쳐 새로운 대형 매장을 짓는 것을 골자로 한다. 계획에 따르면, 새 매장은 약 7,800㎡ 규모의 매장 공간과 430대 규모의 지상·지하 주차장을 갖추게 된다. 이는 현재 매장보다 40% 더 큰 규모다.
푸드스터프(Foodstuffs) 측은 해당 프로젝트가 지역사회와 고객들에게 더 나은 쇼핑 환경을 제공하고, 타카푸나 지역 경제 활성화에도 크게 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다. 신축 매장은 기존 대비 에너지 효율성이 뛰어나며, 최첨단 물류 시스템과 자동화 설비를 갖출 계획이다.
푸드스터프 노스아일랜드의 개발 담당자 마크 포그(Mark Fogle)는 “이 프로젝트는 고객 경험을 한 차원 끌어올리는 동시에 향후 수십 년간 타카푸나 지역의 성장 수요를 충족시킬 수 있는 투자”라며 “지역 커뮤니티의 요구와 환경적 지속가능성을 균형 있게 반영했다”고 강조했다.
오클랜드시는 자원관리법(Resource Management Act)에 따라 제기될 수 있는 항소 없이 조건부 승인을 내렸다. 이에 따라 공사 착공은 이르면 2025년 중반에 가능할 것으로 보이며, 완공은 약 2년 후인 2027년으로 예상된다.
푸드스터프는 또한 이 프로젝트가 약 300개의 건설 일자리를 창출하고, 완공 후에는 상시 고용 인력도 100명 이상 증가할 것으로 내다봤다.
한편, 이번 타카푸나 슈퍼마켓 개발은 뉴질랜드 슈퍼마켓 업계의 경쟁 구도 속에서 진행되는 전략적 투자로 풀이된다. 특히 팍앤세이브 브랜드는 대형 매장을 기반으로 저렴한 가격을 앞세워 소비자들에게 인기를 끌고 있으며, 본 개발은 브랜드의 입지를 더욱 강화할 것으로 보인다.
