Last year’s devastating Auckland floods left over 100 homes in Milford slated for demolition, underscoring the urgency of the project, according to council officials.

Jeff Latch, CEO of Golf NZ, emphasized, “Takapuna Golf Course is more than a sports facility—it’s an affordable public green space for all. With golf participation surging over 50% in the past five years, the need for public courses has never been greater.”
Alternative Proposals Fail to Quell Debate
Golf NZ has submitted an alternative design to preserve the 18-hole course while incorporating flood retention capabilities. Latch argued, “Redesigning the course can balance flood protection with maintaining the golf facility. Sacrificing half the course strips citizens of essential recreational opportunities.”
The local sports community echoes these concerns. Mike Bishop, CEO of Harbour Sport, noted, “Takapuna Golf Course was a lifeline for residents’ health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Losing this affordable, accessible space would be a blow to the community.”
Council Eyes 2027 Start Pending Review
Auckland Council is conducting feasibility studies on both proposals, with a final decision expected upon completion. Construction is slated to begin no earlier than 2027. The council stated, “We are carefully weighing the dual priorities of flood prevention and preserving community recreational spaces.”

그러나 골프계는 이 계획이 지역사회의 중요한 녹지 공간을 훼손할 것이라며 강하게 반대하고 있다. Golf NZ의 제프 래치 대표는 “타카푸나 골프장은 단순한 스포츠 시설이 아니라, 누구나 저렴하게 이용할 수 있는 공공 녹지”라며 “최근 5년간 골프 인구가 50% 이상 급증한 상황에서 공공 골프장의 중요성은 더욱 커졌다”고 밝혔다.
‘대안 제안에도 논란 계속’
Golf NZ는 18홀 골프장을 유지하면서 홍수 저류 기능을 병행할 수 있는 대안 설계를 카운실에 제출했다. 래치 대표는 “코스 재설계를 통해 홍수 방지와 골프장 유지가 모두 가능하다”며 “골프장의 절반을 없애는 것은 시민들의 여가 기회를 박탈하는 결정”이라고 비판했다.
지역 체육계도 이에 동조하고 있다. Harbour Sport의 마이크 비숍 대표는 “타카푸나 골프장은 코로나19 팬데믹 기간 동안 주민들의 건강과 웰빙을 지탱해준 핵심 시설”이라며 “저렴한 이용료로 모든 계층이 즐길 수 있는 공간을 잃는 것은 지역사회에 큰 손실”이라고 우려를 표했다.
‘오클랜드 카운실, 타당성 조사 후 2027년 착공 예정’
오클랜드 카운실은 현재 두 가지 방안에 대한 타당성 조사를 진행 중이며, 최종 결정은 조사가 완료된 후 내려질 예정이다. 공사는 2027년 이후 시작될 것으로 보인다. 카운실은 “침수 방지와 지역사회의 여가 공간 보존이라는 두 가지 목표를 모두 고려해 신중히 검토하겠다”고 밝혔다.
