New Zealand’s Largest Private Hospital Expansion Nears Completion in Auckland’s Epsom

 

 

Auckland’s Allevia Hospital, located in the suburb of Epsom, is nearing completion on a $150 million expansion project, marking the largest private hospital development in New Zealand to date.

The expansion follows the hospital’s rebranding from Mercy Hospital to Allevia Hospital, with construction carried out by Christchurch-based Leighs Construction. The newly built four-storey “Gilgit Wing” is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s medical service capacity.

Dr. Ian England, CEO of the Allevia Hospital Group, stated, “This expansion transforms Allevia into Auckland’s only private hospital equipped with both an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a dedicated high-dependency unit.”

The new facilities, set to officially open this Friday, include:

• Ten state-of-the-art operating theatres, each 60 square metres in size

• A 17-bed post-anaesthesia recovery ward

• Six ICU beds

• Six high-dependency unit beds

• A new ward with 20 private single rooms and four double rooms

• Dedicated spaces for patient families

• A new sterile storage facility

• Two separate staff lounges and changing rooms for surgical teams

As part of the redevelopment, the existing seven smaller theatres in the Prendergast building have been demolished and replaced with larger operating rooms. “The former theatres were only about 30 square metres. The new ones are twice the size and designed to accommodate advanced medical equipment,” said Dr. England.

A wide range of surgical procedures will be performed in the new operating suites, including cardiac, orthopaedic, neurosurgical, gynaecological, urological, and ENT surgeries. Notably, robotic-assisted technology will be used for joint replacement surgeries, expected to improve both precision and efficiency.

The expansion project comprises four major components:

1. A new 877-square-metre building to be leased by The Heart Group, a specialist cardiology clinic

2. Construction of the Gilgit Wing on the former entryway to the original Mercy Hospital

3. A new external sterilisation facility at 79 St Georges Bay Road in Parnell

4. An additional parking level added to the existing carpark to address parking shortages

Dr. England emphasised that extensive measures were taken during construction to minimise disruption to ongoing hospital operations, particularly noise and vibration control. He also noted that the original main hospital entrance has been replaced with access via a new 250-space parking area located on Mountain Road.

Following the name change from MercyAscot Hospitals, Allevia now operates three facilities across Auckland:

• Allevia Hospital Epsom

• Allevia Hospital Ascot

• Allevia Endoscopy Centre

The hospital group treats more than 19,500 patients annually, with over 360 specialist doctors on staff.

While Wellington’s Wakefield Hospital recently completed a $185 million upgrade, Allevia’s expansion is currently the largest underway among New Zealand’s private healthcare institutions.

이번 확장은 기존 머시 병원(Mercy Hospital)에서 알레비아 병원(Allevia Hospital)으로 명칭을 변경한 후 진행되었으며, 크라이스트처치에 본사를 둔 리스 건설(Leighs Construction)이 시공을 맡았다. 새롭게 건설된 4층 규모의 ‘길기트 윙(Gilgit Wing)’은 병원의 의료 서비스 역량을 대폭 강화할 것으로 기대된다.

알레비아 병원 그룹의 최고경영자 이안 잉글랜드 박사는 “이번 확장을 통해 알레비아 병원은 오클랜드에서 유일하게 중환자실(ICU)과 고위험 환자 전담 병동을 모두 갖춘 민간 병원으로 거듭나게 된다”고 밝혔다.

새로운 시설은 오는 금요일 공식 개장하며, 주요 내용은 다음과 같다:

• 최첨단 60㎡ 규모의 수술실 10개

• 마취 후 회복 병동 17병상

• 중환자실(ICU) 6병상

• 고위험 환자 전담 병동 6병상

• 1인실 20개 및 2인실 4개로 구성된 새로운 병동

• 환자 가족을 위한 전용 공간

• 새로운 멸균 물품 보관소

• 직원 휴게실 및 수술실 전용 탈의실 2개

 

기존 프렌더가스트(Prendergast) 건물의 7개 소형 수술실은 철거되고, 새로운 대형 수술실로 대체되었다. 잉글랜드 박사는 “기존 수술실은 약 30㎡에 불과했으나, 새로운 수술실은 두 배 크기로, 첨단 장비를 수용할 수 있도록 설계되었다”고 설명했다.

새로운 수술실에서는 심장, 정형외과, 신경외과, 산부인과, 비뇨기과, 이비인후과 등 다양한 전문 수술이 진행될 예정이다. 특히, 인공관절 수술에는 로봇 기술이 도입되어 수술의 정확성과 효율성이 향상될 것으로 기대된다.

이번 확장 프로젝트는 다음 네 가지 주요 부문으로 구성되었다:

1. 알레비아 병원이 임대하여 심장 전문 클리닉 ‘더 하트 그룹(The Heart Group)’이 입주할 877㎡ 규모의 신규 건물 건설

2. 기존 머시 병원의 진입로였던 공간에 길기트 윙 신축

3. 파넬 지역 세인트 조지스 베이 로드 79번지에 새로운 외부 멸균 처리 시설 구축

4. 주차 공간 부족 문제 해결을 위해 기존 주차장에 추가 층 증축

잉글랜드 박사는 “공사 기간 동안 병원 운영에 지장을 최소화하기 위해 소음과 진동을 줄이기 위한 다양한 조치를 취했다”고 밝혔다. 또한, “기존 병원 정문이 새로운 건물로 대체되어, 현재는 마운틴 로드에 위치한 250대 규모의 주차장을 통해 차량과 보행자가 출입하고 있다”고 설명했다.

알레비아 병원은 이전 머시애스콧 병원(MercyAscot Hospitals)에서 명칭을 변경한 후, 오클랜드에 세 개의 병원을 운영하고 있다:

• 알레비아 병원 엡솜(Allevia Hospital Epsom)

• 알레비아 병원 애스콧(Allevia Hospital Ascot)

• 알레비아 내시경 센터(Allevia Endoscopy)

연간 19,500명 이상의 환자를 진료하며, 360명 이상의 전문의가 근무하고 있다.

한편, 웰링턴의 웨이크필드 병원(Wakefield Hospital)은 최근 1억 8,500만 달러 규모의 확장 공사를 완료했으나, 알레비아 병원의 이번 프로젝트는 현재 진행 중인 민간 병원 확장 중 최대 규모로 평가받고 있다.
