South Auckland Hindu Temple Plan Sparks Community Divide
A proposed Hindu temple in South Auckland’s Drury area has ignited fierce debate, with local residents split over the project.
While some view it as a chance to enrich cultural diversity, others raise concerns about traffic congestion and the erosion of the area’s rural character.
The Indra Sirigiri Trust plans to build a two-story temple on a 4.5-hectare site at 378 Ararimu Road. The complex will include a main worship space dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, three smaller shrines, a fountain, and parking for 121 vehicles. As the site lies within a rural production zone, the project requires resource consent under the Auckland Unitary Plan. A public hearing is set for early June.
From late October to late November last year, 203 submissions were received: 155 in favor, 47 against, and one neutral. Supporters argue the temple will add cultural value, boost the local economy, and provide community services. Opponents, however, cite increased traffic and damage to the rural environment as key concerns. Some objections have included racist remarks, further fueling social tensions.
One resident opposed the project, stating, “We must protect our land and keep New Zealand from becoming another country.” In response, Franklin resident Lily Loveheart Kemp condemned the racist backlash, saying, “I support the Indian community’s right to a place of worship.” Alex Smith added, “This temple will enhance South Auckland’s diversity and cultural vibrancy.”
The Drury temple is expected to follow a similar architectural style to a planned Hindu temple in Christchurch. The Auckland Council will decide on the project’s approval at the June hearing, but a recommendation from authorities to deny resource consent casts uncertainty over its future.

오클랜드 남부의 드루리 지역에 추진 중인 힌두 사원 건립 계획이 지역 주민들의 엇갈린 반응으로 뜨거운 논란을 낳고 있다.
이 프로젝트는 지역 사회의 문화적 다양성을 증진할 기회로 평가받는 동시에, 교통 문제와 지역 특성 훼손 우려로 반대 목소리가 커지고 있다.
인드라 시리기리 트러스트는 드루리 아라리무 로드 378번지 4.5헥타르 부지에 2층 규모의 사원을 건립할 계획이다. 이 사원은 벤카테슈와라 경을 모시는 주요 예배 공간을 비롯해 3개의 소규모 사원, 분수, 그리고 121대의 차량을 수용할 수 있는 주차장을 포함한다. 해당 부지가 농촌 생산 구역에 위치해 있어 오클랜드 통합 계획에 따른 자원 동의 절차가 필요하며, 이에 대한 공청회는 오는 6월 초 열릴 예정이다.
지난 10월 말부터 11월 말까지 접수된 의견은 총 203건으로, 찬성 155건, 반대 47건, 중립 1건으로 집계됐다. 찬성 측은 사원이 지역 사회에 새로운 문화적 가치를 더하고, 지역 경제 활성화와 다양한 커뮤니티 서비스를 제공할 것이라고 주장한다. 반면, 반대 측은 증가할 교통량과 농촌 지역의 고유한 환경 훼손을 주요 이유로 들며 강하게 반발하고 있다. 일부 반대 의견에는 인종차별적 발언이 포함돼 사회적 갈등을 더욱 부추겼다.
특히, 한 주민은 “뉴질랜드를 다른 나라로 바꾸지 않고 우리 땅을 지켜야 한다”며 사원 건립에 반대했다. 이에 대해 프랭클린 지역 주민 릴리 러브하트 켐프는 “인도인 공동체가 예배 장소를 가질 권리를 지지한다”며 인종차별적 반발을 비판했다. 알렉스 스미스 역시 “이 사원은 사우스 오클랜드의 다양성과 문화를 한층 풍요롭게 할 것”이라고 힘을 보탰다.
드루리 사원은 크라이스트처치에 계획된 힌두 사원과 유사한 건축 양식을 따를 것으로 알려졌다. 오클랜드 카운실은 6월 초 공청회를 통해 최종 승인 여부를 결정할 예정이지만, 관련 당국의 자원 동의 거부 권고로 인해 건립 계획의 향후 전개는 불확실한 상황이다.
